A CHRISTIAN REFLECTION FOR MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Written by Praise Afolabi on 16th May 2025
We know mental health struggles affect so many, often in quiet and profound ways, but we believe in the hope found through faith, community, and compassion. Psalm 34:18 says,”The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
BREAKING THE SILENCE
Mental health struggles are not a sign of weak faith. They are a complex issue that requires a holistic approach, encompassing spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. God cares about the entirety of a person, including their mental and emotional state and that mental health struggles are not a reflection of a weak faith. God’s grace and love are available to those struggling with mental health, providing comfort, hole and support.
Even Jesus offered comfort to those feeling overwhelmed. Matthew 11:28,”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Here on Heartsong Live, we want to foster a safe space where talking about mental health is welcomed, not avoided. It’s okay to share your struggles. You are not alone. HeartSong Live is a safe community.
FAITH AND MENTAL WELLNESS
Faith doesn’t always erase pain, but it gives us strength to walk through it. Through prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship, we find resilience, even in the darkest seasons. “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair.” 2 Corinthians 4:8
This Mental Health Week, take a moment to check in with yourself and those around you. And remember, seeking professional help isn’t a lack of faith; it’s a wise and courageous step forward.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING
Caring for your mental health is a spiritual act and Scripture offers timeless wisdom for navigating emotional challenges.
Here are some biblical principles you can apply this week:
Experience less anxiety: Philippians 4:6–7 reminds us to bring our worries to God in prayer. Anxiety isn’t sinful but being consumed by it isn’t God’s plan. His peace is our refuge.
Take one day at a time: In Matthew 6:34, Jesus teaches us not to worry about tomorrow. Living fully in the present frees our minds from unnecessary burdens.
Be slow to anger: Proverbs 14:16–17 encourages us to respond wisely, not react hastily. Anger has its place, but it must be tempered with patience and love (1 Corinthians 13:4–5).
Trust God more deeply: Proverbs 3:5–6 calls us to trust in the Lord rather than lean on our own understanding. When we acknowledge Him, He gives us direction and peace.
Show daily compassion: Jesus teaches us in Luke 10:36–37 to be merciful like the Good Samaritan. One act of kindness each day can transform both our hearts and our communities.
Other practical ways include:
Stay connected: Reach out to loved ones or your church community. Isolation makes the load heavier.
Rest and reflect: Make time for quiet moments, Sabbath rest, and reflection on God’s Word.
Seek support: Speaking to a counsellor or mental health professional is a vital part of healing
Pray: Bring your worries, and the worries of others, to God. He listens.
These spiritual principles, alongside practical steps; rest, prayer, connection, and professional support can build a strong foundation for mental and emotional wellbeing.
