Adetutu VOJ Releases Powerful New Single, “Only You”

Renowned Nigerian gospel minister Adetutu VOJ, based in the United Kingdom, has officially released her latest single, “Only You.”
In an interview with Adetutu VOJ, she shares the inspiration behind the song and her music journey, revealing how personal experiences, moments of deep worship, and a desire to glorify God have shaped the message of “Only You” and her calling as a gospel minister.
1. What was the key moment that sparked the inspiration behind your song?
The key moment was after I read Seun Are’s post on Instagram on that day in 2019. I thought within myself, as African gospel songwriters, do we take into consideration the youngsters out there who may be drawn to the world because the ‘worldly things’ are more attractive, e.g. music? Why do we not make music attractive to them, so they stay within the confines of Jesus while enjoying music? This is what motivated me to write ‘Only You’ with a blend of Afrobeat, and something different from the ‘usual’.
2. How did Seun Are’s Instagram post influence your approach to songwriting?
Seun’s post only influenced the writing of ‘Only You’. I took the youngsters in consideration, and introduced Afrobeats into this one.
3. What message do you believe gospel artists need to communicate to young Christians today?
We know that the world and everything in it look very attractive to our youngsters, even the ones who know Jesus. We need to keep reminding them that God is El-Shaddai, and they can get everything they want within the confines of Jesus. They want Afrobeats which they hear consciously or unconsciously on social media. They can get this from gospel music as well, where the lyrics will edify them in the end.
4. How did the COVID-19 lockdown affect your initial plans for this project?
I initially started the production in December 2019 and planned to continue sometime in February 2020. When the lockdown came into force in March 2020, I knew there was no way I could resume studio sessions. I was also going through a separation at the time, so was emotionally unstable. Due to these, everything music was halted.
5. What emotions did you experience when you lost the original music file during your house move?
It wasn’t my house move but my former producer’s. I was not upset, as I knew he would be able to redo the beats when he had settled down. Secondly, my marriage breakdown had a toll on me emotionally, so I was not bothered about the loss of the file. Apart from this, as we were unsure when the lockdown would come to an end, I did not see myself resuming production soon.
6. What made you decide to revisit the project in 2024 after several years of delay?
I loved the song and it never really left my spirit. I came across a rough version which my ex-producer sent to me in my email and I was happy. By this time, however, he had relocated and I wanted a producer in the UK, in London to be precise.
7. How did you come across 24LDZ, and what qualities stood out about him as a producer?
I met 24LDZ at a church where I went to minister in August 2024. He played during the program and he introduced himself to me after the program, asking if I was a recording artiste as my stage presence suggested so to him. I told him yes, we exchanged numbers and I promised to get in touch if I had a project. I discussed this with my husband as he is musically inclined, and I have been sending demos of several producers to him since January. This was in October (2 months after I met 24LDZ), he listened to his demo and agreed this is our man.
8. What was it like starting the production process all over again with new beats?
It was effortless and seamless. I listened to one that he had done with Limoblaze and I knew he would not have issues creating fresh beats for the song. I sent him an acapella version of Only You and he created fresh beats to it.
9. Can you describe the chemistry or creative synergy you shared with 24LDZ during the recording process, and how it contributed to bringing the song to life?
He is a very patient person, and one thing that surprised me was, he would always make us pray before beginning any session!!! This wowed me!!! The first section was not productive as my voice was not strong, but he encouraged me, reminding me of how amazing I was when we first met at that church in August 2024. He is very creative and would add one or two things, e.g. the Guitar bits in the song., etc.
10. You mentioned facing a health challenge while recording, how did your faith help you push through that season and complete the song despite the discomfort?
I was diagnosed with Graves disease in November 2024 which affected my day-to-day life, up to this day. I couldn’t project, I couldn’t stand for long, and I was always breathless, dizzy, and weak which affected studio sessions. The 3rd session was greatly improved as I was then placed on medication. I have inserted this challenge into the river of prayers, and Jehovah Rapha has shown up for me.
