Bringing Hope Across Borders: How Adopt A Child Scotland is Transforming Lives Through Faith, Food and Friendship
Written by Omosola Fiberesima on 19th July 2025
In a world where hardship knows no borders, Adopt A Child Scotland is rewriting the narrative one child, one grandmother, and one story at a time.
With over 40 years of ministry experience, this faith-driven charity isn’t just about feeding mouths it’s about transforming hearts. Whether you’re walking through the vibrant streets of Guatemala or meeting resilient widows in Albania, the heartbeat of this organisation is clear: connect lives across continents through sponsorship, compassion and the gospel.
So, how exactly does this mission work? What impact has it had? And how can you be a part of it?
Let’s take a closer look.
Unite for Education, Nutrition, and Purpose: A Global Impact with Local Roots
At the heart of Adopt A Child Scotland’s outreach is a simple but profound model sponsorship that goes beyond financial aid. Rooted in Christian values, the organisation builds lasting bridges between individuals in the UK and vulnerable children or elderly individuals in Guatemala and Albania.
Here’s what sets them apart:
- Education & Meals: Every child in the programme receives hot meals, medical care, and the opportunity to attend school.
- Faith & Relationship Building: Sponsors are encouraged to write letters, pray, and build meaningful connections with the children or “grannies” they support.
- Economic Support Through Crafts: Trips to Guatemala often include buying locally handmade crafts such as Bible covers, lanyards, and bracelets, which are resold to support the ministry and the artisans.
- Adopt-a-Granny: Beyond children, the ministry also reaches out to widows and elderly individuals, providing them with essential support and companionship in their later years.
From creative crafts to community meals, and child-like faith to long-lasting transformation this is ministry in motion.
Q&A: Behind the Scenes of Adopt A Child Scotland
Q: What inspired the start of this mission?
The journey began over 40 years ago in Guatemala, following a civil war and a devastating earthquake. A compassionate couple from America responded with humanitarian aid and later established a long-term ministry to support destitute women and children.
Q: What makes the sponsorship programme different?
Every child or “granny” has only one sponsor. This one-to-one relationship fosters deep connections sponsors can write letters, visit during mission trips, and truly invest in someone’s life across the world.
Q: Is sponsorship only financial?
No. While financial aid is vital, relationship-building is just as important. Sponsors are encouraged to write regularly, which often leads to a beautiful exchange of letters and friendship, especially empowering for children.
Q: Can children sponsor other children?
Yes, with parental guidance. Some young people take the initiative to fundraise or ask their families to set up a sponsorship on their behalf. It’s a beautiful example of children showing care for others like them.
Q: Are there any success stories that stand out?
Absolutely. One former sponsored child, Dr. Pablo, was adopted by the founding missionaries. He trained as a doctor in the US and chose to return to Guatemala, where he now oversees medical operations for the ministry. In Albania, a man once employed as a security guard has become a pastor, leading Bible studies and growing a local church.
Q: How are local cultures represented in the ministry?
Through colourful crafts brought back from Guatemala, sponsors not only support children but also help preserve and celebrate local culture. Items like pencil cases, notebooks, and bracelets connect people to the stories and artisans behind them.
Q: What challenges does the ministry face today?
The cost of living crisis has made overseas operations more expensive. This means support is needed now more than ever—to keep expanding and sustaining programmes while maintaining quality and impact.
Q: What’s the M25 project all about?
Inspired by Matthew 25 in the Bible, the M25 project offers a monthly meal to anyone in the community, regardless of sponsorship status. It’s about inclusive love and hospitality. Over 200 people attended the most recent Christmas meal in Guatemala!
Q: How can people get involved or support the ministry?
You can sponsor a child or granny, support one of their outreach projects, or simply spread the word. Their website www.livingwateradoptachild.org has all the details, and their UK office is based in Culloden. You can also call 01463 792600.

If you’ve ever wondered whether one person can make an impact you can. Sponsoring a child or elderly person through Adopt A Child Scotland is not just an act of charity. It’s a commitment to love, to faith, and to building bridges across the globe.
