Written by on 24th January 2019

Alex Salmond has been arrested and is due to appear in court later today, prosecutors have confirmed.

The former leader of the Scottish National Party, 64, is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm a 64 year-old man has been arrested and charged and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Police and prosecutors have released no further details on the nature of his arrest.

According to reports, Mr Salmond is not believed to be in custody.

Mr Salmond formerly served as the First Minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2017, and was the leader of the SNP for over 20 years.

The former MP for Banff and Buchan was one of the foremost proponents of Scottish Independence and had repeatedly called for a referendum on the issue.

In 2014, following the referendum for Scottish Independence, Mr Salmond announced he would not be standing for re-election as the leader of the SNP.
