Your Mind Is Racing; Here Is How to Slow It Down

Written by on 10th February 2026

It’s midnight. The house is a tomb of silence, but inside your head, it’s a stadium at full capacity. You’re replaying a comment your boss made at 2:00 PM, wondering if you left the stove on, and suddenly worrying about the stateof your retirement fund. Your eyes are burning with fatigue, yet the “off” switch for your thoughts seems to have vanished.

Racing thoughts are like a spinning tyre in the mud; the harder you try to stop them with sheer willpower, the deeper they dig. To slow down, you need to change the terrain.

A Calm-Down Routine Rooted in Peace
To shift from mental chaos to spiritual stillness, try this structured “slow down” routine:

The External Brain Dump: Your brain holds onto thoughts because it’s afraid you’ll forget them. Permit it to let go by writing everything down. Use a physical notepad. List the worries, the tasks, and the “what-ifs.” Once it’s on
paper, your brain can stop “holding” it.

The “5-4-3-2-1” Grounding Method: Pull your mind out of the future and back into the room.

Acknowledge 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

Scripture as an Anchor: Don’t just read the Word; breathe it.

Take Philippians 4:6-7:Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Visualise yourself physically handing the “Brain Dump” list over to a higher power.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Starting at your toes and moving to your jaw, tense each muscle group for five seconds and then release. Feel the tension leaving your physical body.
