Celebrating Everyday Heroes A Sweet Journey with Edinburgh Honey

At the heart of every successful community are individuals who bring passion, dedication, and a quest for excellence. Continuing with Heartsong Live Radio’s Community Week: Celebrating Everyday Heroes, the focus shifts to Andrew and Martha, the people behind Edinburgh Honey, a family-run business at 178 Easter Road, Leith, Edinburgh, with a beekeeping tradition of over 60 years.

From raw, unfiltered Scottish heather honey to more exotic infusions like turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger, Edinburgh Honey is less a shop than a hub of sustainability, heritage, and quality craftsmanship. Andrew’s background is fascinating, from aspiring chef to taking up his family’s beekeeping legacy again, encouraged by his grandfather’s incredible story.

The Power of Pure Honey

One of the most attractive aspects of the Edinburgh Honey Company is their commitment to 100% raw and natural honey. Unlike processed brands, their honey still has the valuable enzymes, minerals, and antibacterial properties intact, making it not just delicious but also healthy.

“Good honey is not merely sugar. It has microelements and minerals which help you in your daily struggle with microbes,” Andrew explains.

They even offer free honey tastings so that customers can try the different flavors and learn about the science and benefits behind each one.

Sustainability & Beekeeping in Scotland

Other than honey, Edinburgh Honey plays a role in sustainable beekeeping, and they maintain healthy bees in Scotland’s clean, untouched landscapes. Andrew highlights that bees are woodland creatures, and by moving them to different floral sources like clover, heather, and rapeseed fields, they are not only able to produce high-quality honey but also help in pollination activities.

“Scotland has 75% of the world’s heather plants, which is why our heather honey is the best,” he says.

Beyond Honey: A Community Staple

Edinburgh Honey doesn’t stop at honey, though, they also produce beeswax candles, soaps, and creams, all with natural ingredients. Their dedication to quality has earned them awards at the Scottish Food & Drink Trade Show, where their Hot Toddy Honey with Whiskey won Best Product Award.

“We wanted to create a space where people could learn about, taste, and appreciate pure honey,” Andrew explains.

Why They Are Everyday Heroes

Edinburgh Honey is not just a business but a story of perseverance, history, and passion. Andrew and Martha are everyday unsung heroes, sharing authentic honey, educating consumers, and promoting sustainable beekeeping, leaving a lasting mark on health, heritage, and the environment.
