From Banking to Blessings: Finding the Extraordinary in an Ordinary Life
Written by Praise Afolabi on 23rd December 2025
Have you ever wondered if there is more to your daily routine than just the 9-to-5 grind? Perhaps you’ve felt a quiet tugging at your heart, suggesting that your skills in the boardroom or at the office might actually be preparation for something much deeper. Many of us spend our lives waiting for a “grand sign,” yet often, the most profound transformations begin in the quietest moments of surrender.
The journey from a structured career in finance to a life of full-time ministry is rarely a straight line. It is often paved with unexpected challenges, miraculous recoveries, and the simple, courageous act of saying “yes” to the unknown. The thesis of a life well-lived is simple: when we surrender our ordinary days to God, He weaves them into an extraordinary story of faith, healing, and purpose.
The Turning Point: From Fatigue to Freedom
For many years, Mike Preston’s world was defined by the fast-paced environment of banking and finance. Joining the industry at 18, he developed the communication and presentation skills that would later become his greatest tools. However, life took a dramatic turn when he contracted ME (post-viral fatigue). For 18 months, he was barely able to function, reaching a point of total desperation.
In his darkest hour, Mike made a promise: “Lord, if You heal me, I will serve You for the rest of my life.”
The response was nothing short of miraculous. After receiving prayer at a church service, the power of God brought complete restoration. The very next day, the man who could barely move was back at his desk, even working overtime. This wasn’t just a physical recovery; it was a divine appointment that set the stage for the next 34 years of service.
The Power of a Servant Heart
Transitioning from banking to ministry wasn’t about discarding old skills, but repurposing them. Mike discovered that the confidence gained in finance allowed him to share the Word of God publicly, despite being a naturally shy person.
His path to leadership wasn’t rushed. It involved a decade of being mentored, learning the “good, the bad, and the ugly” of church life, and serving wherever a door opened. This journey highlights three pillars for any believer facing a challenge:
-
Trust God in all things: Even when the path is unclear.
-
Have faith: He is an extraordinary God who handles the “how.”
-
Keep a servant heart: Even through personal grief, such as the loss of a spouse, serving others can be a pathway to personal healing.
Walking in Divine Synchronicity
One of the most beautiful aspects of a life of faith is watching the “fleece moments” unfold. When Mike felt the call to move from Essex to Scotland, he asked for a sign: that his house would sell in just three days despite a slumped market. It sold in one.
From finding a home that came fully furnished down to the vases and linen to having the beds made by the previous owner upon arrival, these “divine appointments” serve as a reminder that God’s hand is on every move when we walk in obedience.
Reimagining What it Means to Follow
Through his experiences, Mike authored two impactful books: Extraordinary Moments in an Ordinary Life and Discipleship Reimagined. The latter was born from a moment of clarity regarding what it actually means to be a follower of Christ. He defines a disciple through five transformative stages:
-
Believer
-
Follower
-
Learner
-
Imitator
-
Replicator
He suggests that if we shift our focus from mere “church maintenance” to true discipleship, the culture of our communities and our lives will be completely transformed.
Hearing the Still, Small Voice
Whether it’s a “word of knowledge” that helps break a spiritual burden for a family across the globe or a sudden prompting to leave a shopping centre moments before a crisis, hearing God is rooted in total surrender. It’s about laying the day before Him every morning and being ready to obey, whether you’re in a pulpit or a bank.
Life is indeed short. As Mike’s journey shows us, the most fulfilling way to spend it is to live it entirely for Jesus.
