Not Every Conversion Comes with Fireworks: How Quiet Encounters with Jesus Can Change a Life
Written by Praise Afolabi on 30th June 2025
You’ve probably heard a few faith stories that sounded like blockbuster movies. Paul’s blinding light on the road to Damascus, or a former gang member turned preacher, overnight. These dramatic conversion stories often grab the spotlight. But what about the quieter ones? What if your faith journey isn’t loud, public, or wrapped in fanfare? What if it happens in a Sleeping bag on a cold night in Wales?
Some people meet God in the middle of chaos: addiction, prison, war, or loss. Others, like Michael, encounter Him in silence, away from the spotlight, without anyone else even knowing it happened. Joined by a man whose faith journey wasn’t theatrical on Arise Show, he shares his understated testimony and how it has led him from a luxury business career into serving people affected by leprosy across the world. His story is a reminder that not all callings begin with a microphone, but they can still echo for a lifetime.
THE SILENCE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Michael’s story begins not in a cathedral but at a youth camp. “I remember someone quoting Jesus to Nicodemus, saying,g ‘You must be born again.’ I didn’t understand what that meant,” he recalls. “But I was a missionary kid. I felt like I should know, so I never asked.”
Months later, tucked away in a tent during youth camp, a tent leader spoke about how many people come to faith in quiet, undramatic ways. No flashing lights, no booming voices, just a simple invitation to Jesus: “Come into my life. Be my Lord”.
Michael made that decision alone, quietly, without telling anyone. “There was no emotional high, just a peace as I fell asleep, knowing I’d given everything to God,” he says. It was the beginning of a lifelong journey filled with questions, growth, wrestling, and eventually Bible school. The kind of story many people live but rarely share.
IS MY STORY “ENOUGH”?
For those raised in church or surrounded by faith-filled families, there can be a subtle pressure to have a big testimony. Michael understands this well. “When you grow up hearing stories like your dad’s, you think, ‘Well, the story isn’t that special.’ But God meets each of us differently.”
He recalls a conversation with his son, who had a friend at university recently give his life to Christ. The friend had battled depression, drugs, and even explored Islam, searching for peace in all the wrong places.
One day, sitting alone, he looked up to the sky and cried out to Jesus. That was the turning point. “No one led him in a prayer. He wasn’t in church. It was a raw, personal moment between him and God,” Michael says.
YOUR MOMENT MIGHT BE NOW
Michael’s message is clear: You don’t have to wait for a perfect setting or a dramatic event. Jesus meets you right where you are. “If you’re sitting in chaos, questioning life, feeling like you’ve missed your chance; you haven’t,” he says.
“In a quiet moment, right now, you can say, ‘Jesus, I want You in my life. That’s where transformation begins.” He adds, “And once you make that decision, please don’t do it alone. Find a Bible-believing community where you can grow, learn, and be supported.”
WHEN YOUR STORY LEADS YOU TO SERVE THE BROKEN
Michael’s quiet conversion laid a foundation for a life of service, but it wasn’t a straight path. For 27 years, he ran a successful business. Then the pandemic hit. He was forced to shut down everything. “Being a Christian doesn’t mean you won’t face storms,” he says.
In the aftermath, he felt a strong pull away from luxury goods and toward something more meaningful. That’s when he discovered the Leprosy Mission. “I didn’t know much about leprosy work, but there was a strange connection,” he says. He applied and got his first-ever job interview at 43.
A CHILDHOOD MEMORY THAT NEVER LEFT
During that interview, Michael found himself sharing a story he hadn’t thought of in years. As a child in Congo, his father fell gravely ill with malaria. Treatments failed. Michael was just 10, home alone with his dad. Then came a knock at the door. It was a man from the local leprosy community, a group shunned by most.
He had walked, slowly and painfully, across the village. He handed Michael’s dad two small chicken eggs.
“He said, ‘Thank you for all you’ve done for our village,’” Michael remembers. “They had nothing. But he gave us what he had. It felt like the widow’s mite.”
That moment stayed with him for life. “It taught me that generosity isn’t about how much you have. It’s about what you’re willing to give.”
LEPROSY STILL EXISTS, BUT SO DOES HOPE
Today, Michael serves with The Leprosy Mission UK, raising awareness and support for those affected by a disease many think died out with the Bible.
“Every two minutes, someone is diagnosed with leprosy,” he explains. “And for every one person we identify, the WHO estimates 19 go undiagnosed.”
Many live in hidden communities, isolated, disfigured, and rejected. “Our mission is to find them. To care for them. To remind them that they are not forgotten.”
A GLIMPSE INTO THE WORK ON THE GROUND
During a visit to India, Michael met a man with a foot ulcer so severe, maggots had taken residence in the wound. Later that day, he saw another man arrive on a bicycle, someone who had been cured of leprosy over 30 years ago. He came to receive a new prosthetic leg. “When we asked what the hospital meant to him, he paused and said something that moved us all,” Michael says.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR QUIET YES
Your story might not be loud, dramatic, or wrapped in fireworks, but it matters. The world doesn’t need more polished performances; it needs real people with real faith, people like Michael, who said yes to Jesus in a tent, and yes again years later to serve the unseen. And maybe, just maybe, this is your moment to say yes, too.
Have you ever had a quiet, life-changing moment with God? Or are you still waiting for one?
