Give Yourself Permission to Dream Again”: Dr Rhona Morrison on Grief, Reinvention and Taking Leaps of Faith

Written by on 10th September 2025

When life changes in an instant, what do you do? For Dr Rhona Morrison, a sudden shift in her world forced her to face grief head-on. But what began as heartbreak transformed into a journey of resilience, creativity, and new beginnings. Today, she is an author, painter, lecturer, and international traveller whose story proves that even after devastating loss, it is possible to rise again.

Her journey carries a simple but powerful thesis: healing starts with permission to grieve, permission to heal, and permission to dream again.

Who Is Dr Rhona Morrison?

Dr Rhona Morrison is not someone who can be put into a single box. Born and raised in Scotland, she grew up in a working-class family and learned the values of humour, generosity, and resilience early in life. Her sister’s physical and learning disabilities instilled in her a deep sense of empathy and patience qualities that prepared her for a demanding career in forensic psychiatry.

For over 30 years, she worked in the NHS with mentally disordered offenders, balancing the complexities of justice and care. Her career in forensic psychiatry exposed her to resilience in unexpected places, often humbling her as she walked alongside people on difficult journeys.

But her story doesn’t end with her medical career. Life, as she would discover, had much more in store.

Writing Through Grief: I Don’t Talk to Dead Bodies

Rhona’s first book, I Don’t Talk to Dead Bodies, came out of a deeply personal chapter of her life. After the loss of her husband, she found herself navigating a world that looked completely different from the one she had known.

“Writing my memoir was cathartic,” she said. “It helped me process what had happened, but also to honour the life we shared and to capture the positives even in the midst of pain.”

For her, the act of writing was not about creating a bestseller; it was about survival. It was about putting words to feelings that often seemed too heavy to carry.

She often encourages new writers not to overthink the process: “Don’t get too hung up on the text. Just write your stories down. Editing and polishing can come later. The most important thing is to get the story out.”

Serendipity at Sea: From Grief to Global Adventure

Life has a way of opening new doors in the most unexpected places. For Rhona, one of those doors opened on a cruise to Antarctica.

A friend mentioned her memoir at the dinner table to a fellow passenger. That small conversation sparked an opportunity that would change her life. Within weeks, Rhona was invited to deliver her first lecture on a cruise ship bound for Japan.

“I hadn’t lectured on a cruise before,” she recalled, “but I thought, you know what, I’ll give it a go. And that was the start of a new journey.”

That one moment of serendipity has since led her around the world. She now travels widely as a cruise lecturer, sharing stories, teaching art, and inspiring audiences at sea.

Giving Yourself Permission

At the heart of Rhona’s message is a liberating truth: permission is not something others give you; it’s something you must give yourself.

She knows what it means to feel paralysed by loss, unsure of how to begin again. But she also knows the power of saying, “I am allowed to move forward. I am allowed to be happy again.”

Her philosophy is beautifully captured in her mantra: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And give yourself permission to be happy.”

It is a reminder that healing does not mean forgetting. Instead, it means choosing to honour the past while embracing the future.

From Crime Scene to Cruise Ships: The New Chapter

Rhona’s newest book, From Crime Scene to Cruise Ships, marks yet another turning point in her journey. It moves beyond her memoir of grief and explores the surprising path from forensic psychiatry to global lecturing.

Set for release on 7th August, the book is already available for pre-order on Amazon in paperback and e-book formats. An audiobook edition will follow shortly after.

To celebrate, she is hosting a book launch on 6th August at Glenscarley Castle in Banknote, a fittingly grand venue for a story that bridges forensic crime scenes and luxury cruise ships.

This book reflects not only her career change but also her embrace of new adventures. It captures the courage to reinvent yourself and the joy of unexpected opportunities.

Lessons from a Life Rewritten

What makes Dr Rhona Morrison’s story so compelling is not just her achievements, but the way she embodies resilience. She is proof that grief does not have to be the end of your story, it can be the beginning of a new one.

Her life is an invitation to others who are stuck in loss, doubt, or fear. An invitation to pick up a pen, to say yes to a new opportunity, or to simply allow themselves to dream again.

As she puts it: “The future may be different, but it doesn’t have to be a bad one.”
