‘Glorious Rescue’ by Jonny Somervell

Written by on 11th June 2019

Glorious Rescue is full of crunchy guitars, energetic and pacey drums, and showcases Jonny’s songwriting talents in abundance.

There’s an air of NEEDTOBREATHE, Switchfoot and even slight glances towards Busted (if you squint and look hard enough) to this track. However, it’s the ability to craft lyrics that are both personally honest yet universally applicable where Jonny really shines.

The song Glorious Rescue was written from spiritual revelation and to an extent it largely wrote itself. During a personal time of prayer, I started to reflect on how far Jesus came to save us and his never-changing, all-encompassing love. As I continued to dwell on this, God started to give me some new lyrics and before I knew it this worship anthem (the chorus) was playing in my head – You came running after every last soul // You wouldn’t leave a single one alone // You came running after every last soul // You longed to see Your children come home. I felt incredibly inspired by God’s creativity and the way He was writing a new worship song in my head!

At this point I realised that God was birthing a new and exciting song in me so I grabbed my guitar and sang through the chorus a few times. After this the rest of the song came very quickly, with the verse focusing on how God’s heart never changed for us and how Jesus came ‘running across the galaxies’ to save us and bring us home. The bridge takes inspiration from Hebrews 10 and marvels at how we can stand ‘on holy ground’ in the presence of God because of what Jesus has done for us. What a GLORIOUS RESCUE it was!
