Finding Devotion in Life’s Heaviness: Joyce Ochelle Shares Her Journey
Written by Praise Afolabi on 18th December 2025
Some mornings feel heavier than others. The weight of responsibilities, challenges, and personal struggles can leave even the strongest questioning how to keep going. Yet, devotion true, heartfelt devotion, doesn’t disappear when life feels difficult. It grows in the very moments that test us, shaping strength, character, and faith.
Joyce Ochelle, a Nigerian British singer-songwriter, worship minister, wife, and mother, recently opened up about her journey of faith, resilience, and music birthed from life’s most demanding seasons. Her story is a testament to how devotion, rooted in honesty and persistence, can sustain a person even under immense pressure.
A Calling Born from Experience
Joyce’s path into worship and music began in childhood but truly revealed itself in her teenage years. At 14, while many of her peers advanced to university, Joyce felt delayed in her own journey. Instead of succumbing to disappointment, she turned to God and her creative gifts.
During a night vigil at her church in Abuja, Joyce approached the choir pastor, asking for a chance to minister. With the opportunity granted, she wrote and performed her very first song, inspired entirely by her personal experiences a song about hope, trust, and perseverance.
“It was about inspiring others and myself through what I was walking through,” she shared. That moment marked a turning point: worship was no longer just a love, but a calling to serve and encourage others through music.
Years later, Joyce’s professional music career officially began in 2020, following the birth of her little boy, who is severely disabled and non-verbal. Through this new season of intense challenge, she discovered that her music could be both a personal refuge and a ministry to others, guided by the Holy Spirit.
Devotion Amidst Daily Challenges
Joyce’s son faces severe disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, alongside a range of physical and emotional challenges. Each day brings a mixture of mental, emotional, and physical demands that could easily overwhelm anyone.
Yet Joyce’s faith remains her anchor. She described how professionals, family, and even those unfamiliar with God notice her strength and resilience. “Many see me still singing and producing music despite the challenges, and they call it miraculous. I call it faith,” she explained.
Joyce shared that worship is her lifeline when prayer feels impossible. Playing worship music, singing spontaneously, or declaring scripture aloud uplifts her spirit and regulates her mind. These practices have become a daily ritual that sustains her and enables her to continue ministering through her music.
Music as Ministry and Healing
Joyce’s latest song, The Great I Am, emerged during a season of personal tragedy. Early last year, her family suffered a profound loss, and Joyce faced both physical and emotional exhaustion. Returning to church after months away, she was prompted to fast, pray, and write a song. Initially uncertain, she obeyed.
In one moment of prayer, she experienced a trance-like, spiritual encounter where the song’s words flowed spontaneously. Capturing the inspiration immediately on her phone, Joyce birthed a worship anthem grounded in obedience, trust, and perseverance.
She also collaborated with Pastor Eunice from Manchester, describing the partnership as a Holy Spirit-led connection that offered mutual encouragement, spiritual guidance, and a shared sense of calling. The collaboration reflects Joyce’s belief that ministry can flourish through community and divine alignment.
Devotion Grows in Small Steps
Through her journey, Joyce emphasised practical lessons for sustaining devotion even under pressure:
-
Honesty is essential. True devotion begins with acknowledging where you are and how you feel. God meets people in their reality, not where they pretend to be.
-
Small, consistent rhythms matter. Devotion grows through tiny, deliberate actions, a single verse, a prayer, a worship song, or a quiet reflective moment.
-
Pressure is not a sign of absence. Challenging seasons often form the deepest strength in a person, shaping resilience and spiritual depth.
These lessons offer guidance for anyone feeling stretched, overwhelmed, or uncertain about maintaining focus on their purpose and faith.
