Leith Bottle Shop: A Community Jewel for Craft Beer and Fine Wine
Written by Praise Afolabi on 10th April 2025
Independent local businesses are the heartbeat of any community, and at the hub of Leith, Edinburgh, is one shop that is demonstrating just how important they can be. Leith Bottle Shop, on Great Junction Street, is not only a shop, it’s a hub for craft beer enthusiasts, wine specialists, and community heroes.
As part of Community Week: Celebrating Every Day Heroes, we’re shining the light on local businesses that make a difference. Not only do these firms provide excellent products and services, but also contribute to the character and resilience of the community. In this feature, we’re shining the light on Leith Bottle Shop and its contribution to the community.
Beginning a Post-Pandemic Business: A Bold Begin
Starting a new venture is never easy, but Alex was undeterred, opening Leith Bottle Shop during the COVID-19 pandemic when the future was most uncertain.
”We knew it was a tough time. The high street was changing at the local level, and the cost-of-living crisis was a concern. But we also saw opportunity, more people were remaining local, and people had a genuine appreciation for local products and small firms”.
Leith is home to one of the highest concentrations of independent breweries in Scotland, with five craft breweries just a 20-minute walk from the shop. Recognising a gap in the market, Alex created a venue that celebrates Leith’s brewing heritage, with a carefully curated selection of craft beers, fine wine, and unusual spirits.
More Than a Shop: A Community Hub
It is not just the products that make Leith Bottle Shop special, it is the community that it fosters.
The shop provides complimentary tasting sessions on Thursdays, where the customers can taste craft beers and wine, meet local brewers, and socialise with other beer enthusiasts.
“People went back regularly, met other individuals, and built relationships. No longer was it just buying a bottle, it was now an experience, a community.”
The shop also features a community wall, upon which local events and businesses can advertise with posters and flyers, further connecting residents and small businesses of Leith.
The success and difficulties of running a small business
Like most small business owners, Alex has had his share of tough times. Seasonal fluctuation means Christmas is the busy season, with January and February being the slow months. But his belief in the business and the encouragement of loyal customers keep him going.
”There will be highs and lows. Some weeks, you will be wondering why on earth you’re doing this. But then some regular comes along, says something nice, or tells you that they like the shop, and it makes it all worthwhile.”
His advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
“Believe in your idea. If you think that it is worthwhile, stick with it. There will be tough spots, but belief in your vision will propel you forward.”
Why Support Local?
Heartsong Live’s Community Week is focused on recognising the people and the businesses that make a difference. By shopping from local stores like Leith Bottle Shop, consumers help directly contribute to the local economy, encourage community, and retain unique,
high-quality items unavailable from large chain outlets. So why would I choose the local store instead of the big chain? How do small businesses contribute to a stronger, community-based community?
