What It Takes to Lead a Life-Changing Charity: Inside Mark Vance’s Journey and the 40-Year Legacy of WLDAS
Written by Praise Afolabi on 4th June 2025
What makes someone leave the motor trade to build a career helping people change their lives? For Mark Vance, now the Managing Director of West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service (WLDAS), it came down to one thing, a deep desire to make a real difference. His journey began as a student learning to become a Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist.
Today, he leads one of West Lothian’s most trusted addiction support charities. Along the way, Mark has shown that when you’re willing to grow, reflect, and take a few risks, you can turn purpose into progress.
A Career Shaped by Compassion and Purpose
Mark’s path to leadership began in 2011 when he was a student training to become a Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist. Starting as a part-time therapist with West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service, he steadily moved up the ranks, serving as a counsellor, and team leader, and later transitioning into managerial roles across various services, including Change Grow Live and private clinical practice.
In April 2022, Mark returned to WLDAS as General Manager, bringing with him a decade of experience in counselling, harm reduction, and strategic leadership. His journey is a testament to the power of reflection, adaptability, and a willingness to grow qualities he encourages in those considering a career in addiction services.
Inside the Role: Managing a Life-Changing Charity
As General Manager, Mark oversees the daily operations and long-term strategy of WLDAS. He manages communications, chairs high-level meetings, and supervises both staff and volunteers. WLDAS plays a pivotal role in West Lothian’s Addiction Care Partnership, working alongside the NHS, Change Grow Live, and other support services to deliver a “no wrong door” policy ensuring anyone seeking help receives timely and appropriate support.
The charity provides:
- One-to-one counselling and therapy
- Harm reduction services (including Naloxone training and clean equipment)
- Support for families and young people affected by substance use or sudden deaths
- Collaborative programs with Circle West Lothian and the Youth Action Project
The Emotional Rewards of a Demanding Career
Working in addiction and recovery services can be emotionally taxing, but Mark finds motivation in witnessing a transformation.“Seeing people improve and achieve their goals that’s what keeps me going” he shared.
He also emphasized the value of early intervention, particularly in supporting youth. For those considering a similar path, Mark recommends identifying personal strengths, embracing learning opportunities, and volunteering to gain experience.
