NETWORK MARKETING EXPLAINED IN ITS SIMPLEST: LESSONS FROM TERESA EDWARDS
Written by Praise Afolabi on 17th April 2025
There are a lot of misconceptions about network marketing. For some people, it is another
Ponzi scheme. However, there are records of people’s successes in an unconventional
business model. One that thrives on relationships, consistency, and long-term vision.
On this week’s episode of Throwback Thursday with Eloho, Teresa Edwards, a network
marketing expert, shares a holistic approach to succeeding in the field and how to
identify the right company. What kinds of companies should we look to partner with, and what
impact does it have on fellow believers?
WHERE IT ALL STARTED: TERESA EDWARD’S JOURNEY
Teresa Edward’s Journey is one of transformation and purpose. She transitioned from a
flourishing music career into full-time ministry after her divorce and then ventured into
network marketing, a path that many overlook. She has built a thriving business that provides financial freedom and empowers others to do the same.
Through it all, Teresa has remained deeply rooted in faith, even after facing a health
the challenge that changed the course of her career, using every platform as an opportunity to
inspire, uplift, and lead with integrity.
THE DEFINING POINT
Teresa, after undergoing a major surgery that altered her physical abilities, was determined
never to give up. Driven by a heart of service, she wanted to make a difference in people’s
lives despite her physical limitations.“If you are a Christian and you’re trying to work towards being more like Christ, service should be your number one focus,” she says.
At her lowest, losing her hair and confidence, she reconnected with a friend who introduced
her to a line of wellness products.” What do I have to lose? I’ve tried everything else. Let’s
give it a go,” she recalls.
Surprisingly, the results were undeniable. Her hair began to grow back, and her natural glow
returned. Most importantly, she began to feel like herself again, confident and full of hope.
Without hesitation, she decided to help others by sharing her testimony.
WHAT IS NETWORK MARKETING?
Network marketing is about connection. It is part of who we are as humans. Once you’re
engaging with people, building relationships, and sharing value, you’re networking. It’s part
of our everyday life.
When you were negotiating with your mom as a child, helping with a family business, or
even sharing something with others. We’ve been doing it all our lives without even realizing
it.
HOW NETWORK MARKETING DIFFERS FROM A PYRAMID SCHEME
A pyramid scheme differs from network marketing because of how the business plan is
built. A pyramid scheme is illegal. In a pyramid scheme, the person at the top benefits from
the work of those below without lifting a finger.
But Network marketing works differently. It’s a performance-based model, not a hierarchy of
guaranteed profits. If you’re building a team of 100 members, you have the responsibility to
work both on your business and in supporting your team. So if one of these members outranks you, you won’t earn from their achievements.
GETTING IT RIGHT FROM THE START
Several people have concerns regarding what kind of companies they should look into. How
to identify companies with integrity, especially with so many out there?
1. Check if the company is registered with a Direct Selling Association (DSA): If
you are in Europe, look for companies under the Direct Selling Association. The U.S
And Canada has their version. These associations have strict guidelines that
companies and their representatives must follow. Being registered means the
company is accountable and operates within a clear ethical framework. You can
easily search “Direct Selling Association” online and find a list of approved
companies.
2. Research the company’s values and mission: Choose one that aligns with your
personal beliefs and priorities. ”For me, I looked for a company with a Christian
foundation and a strong focus on health, which is important in my faith as a
Seventh-day Adventist”. It wasn’t just about physical health, but mental and
spiritual well-being. I also wanted something family-oriented, something that would
complement my lifestyle and values.
In short, do research, look for ethical practices, and make sure it aligns with who
You are.
COMMON PITFALLS TO AVOID IN DIGITAL MARKETING
1. Failing to Ask Questions or Research People: Network marketing is a people-driven
business, so it’s important to ask the right questions, especially when you’re just getting
started. Don’t hold back your doubts or concerns. A trustworthy partner will be open and able
to answer your questions.
2. Do Research: Do your research on the independent market partner who approaches you.
Make sure their lifestyle and values align with yours before moving forward, no matter how
Their offer may seem attractive.
3. Expecting Quick Results Without Effort: Network marketing is a real job, not a
get-rich-quick scheme. While some companies deal in digital products and offer bonuses for
recruiting others, this model often requires serious commitment. Don’t be discouraged if you
don’t see results immediately. Just like any business, success takes time, consistency, and
perseverance. Many traditional businesses fail in their first year due to a lack of endurance; network marketing is no different.
4. Approaching People Without Building Trust First: Network marketing isn’t for
everyone, and that’s okay. If you’re genuinely trying to help someone, take the time to build a
relationship first. Establish trust before introducing the business. When your focus is on
people, not just sales, you’ll be able to identify if the opportunity is truly a fit for them. A
relationship-first approach is always more sustainable.
5. Focusing Solely on Profit Over People: At its core, network marketing is about people. If you remove that human element and focus only on profits, your efforts will likely fail. People can sense inauthenticity, even if not immediately. Building a people-first foundation leads to long-term success, not just short-term
wins.
CENTERING FAITH IN BUSINESS
For Teresa Edwards, network marketing isn’t just a business, it is a ministry. She uses it as a
platform to share her faith, lead with integrity, and build meaningful relationships. Her training
always begins with God, and she integrates scripture to guide her team, whether they’re
Christians or not.
The business gives her the freedom to prioritize faith and family, allowing her to live a life
aligned with biblical values. More than making money, she finds joy in serving others,
building community, and being a reflection of Christ in everyday life, often leading team
members to experience God through her example.
Let your business be more than a hustle; make it a ministry. Start centering your faith in all
you do, just like Teresa. Lead with purpose. Serve with love. Reflect Christ in every step.
What about you?
Have you ever thought of your work or business as a ministry? Take a moment to reflect: Is your faith at the center of what you do daily?
Whether you’re just starting or have been building for years, now’s the time to pause and realign. Share your thoughts. How are you centering your faith in your business or career? Let’s talk in the comments. Someone might need your story to find their path.
