When Jesus Finds You in the Middle – Pastor Ricky’s Story
Written by Praise Afolabi on 12th August 2025
What if the turning point in your life didn’t come at the start of a fresh chapter, or at the triumphant end, but right in the messy middle? The middle, where nothing feels certain, where your mistakes seem louder than your hope, and where the weight of your past makes you wonder if God could possibly meet you there.
That’s the very place Jesus steps in, not when you’re polished, but when you’re still in the storm. This is the heartbeat of Pastor Ricky’s Christian testimony. Now a youth pastor at Sittingbourne Baptist Church, he didn’t
begin his journey in the pulpit. His early years in South East London were marked by crime, confusion, and brokenness until a life-changing encounter in a small Baptist church in Greenwich set him on a new path.
Today, his ministry is living proof that Jesus meets you exactly where you are and can transform even the most chaotic beginnings into a story of hope in God and redemption.
From Rejection to Redemption in South East London
Pastor Ricky grew up in South East London. Although his childhood was fairly normal at first, things changed around age 14 when the absence of his father and feelings of rejection began to affect him.
Falling out with his mother and influenced by friends who accepted crime as their reality, he began dealing drugs at 16. His activities escalated from selling cannabis to Class A drugs, driven by a desire for material
possessions and an image of strength and success.
During this period, he faced violence, threats, and the loss of friends to drugs, including a close friend who died of a heart attack at 24. “There had to be more to life,” he reflected after witnessing his friend’s funeral on what would have been his 25th birthday.
Looking back, Ricky wishes he had spoken openly about his feelings of rejection rather than bottling them up. He believes vulnerability and having someone to talk to are key to overcoming rejection.
A Life-Changing Encounter in Greenwich
At 26, while struggling with anxiety and depression, Ricky discovered that his nan had secretly been a Christian since attending a Billy Graham crusade. After a time away from faith, she apologised and invited him to church in Greenwich.
Unsure at first, Ricky felt drawn back. A conversation with the pastor about who Jesus is and what He offers led to a life-changing realisation. As his faith grew, he recognised the need to leave London to avoid old influences. At 27, he was baptised, marking the end of his old life and the beginning of a new life transformation in Christ.
Walking Through the Middle
Pastor Ricky described the “middle” of his journey as a time of feeling unworthy, yet discovering through Scripture that Jesus had chosen him even in his darkest moments. Moving from London to Chatham allowed
him to leave behind old influences and focus on his relationship with Jesus.
During this time, God removed what did not belong in his life and placed Pastor Matthew as a spiritual father to guide him. This season deepened his love for God, leading to more prayer, fasting, and time in His presence. “Leaving harmful environments is key to embracing a new life in Christ,” he shared.
From Family Life to Prison Ministry
Ricky reflected on the remarkable transformation from never imagining marriage, children, and ministry to seeing God bring it all to pass. A pivotal moment came when he moved to a new church, met his spiritual father, and later his wife Jade.
Today, they are raising their sons, Jacob and Jude, in a Christian home free from the trauma he had known.
One of his most humbling experiences came during a mission trip to Ghana’s maximum-security prison. Initially anxious at the sight of prisoners’ crimes displayed above the doors and with only one guard
present, he witnessed a powerful move of God as hardened men wept, sought Jesus, and asked for healing.
“Even the hardest of hearts are not beyond God’s grace,” Ricky recalled.
Reaching the Next Generation
Before becoming a youth pastor, Ricky worked as a youth justice worker for Kent County Council. It was there that God called him back into youth ministry. One young man from Peckham, who had committed armed
robbery, was assigned to work with him. Through openness and vulnerability, they built trust. The young man secured a job, progressed to site manager, and said no one had ever told him he could succeed without looking over his shoulder.
This reminded Ricky that challenges like crime and brokenness also exist within church walls, reigniting his passion for ministry.
His approach to youth work combines:
1. Openness and Vulnerability : Building trust through honesty.
2. Meeting Them Where They Are: Understanding their world without judgement.
3. Balancing Word and Wisdom: Using prayer and Scripture while
applying practical understanding.
Come As You Are
Ricky’s Christian testimony carries a simple but powerful truth: no matter where you are in addiction, in prison, or simply feeling stuck. There is hope for you.
God loves you deeply and will meet you right where you are. You don’t need to “fix yourself” before coming to Him; let Him clothe you, heal you, and bring you into His marvellous light. His plans for your life are greater
than anything you could imagine, but it starts with letting Him in, just as you are.
