Stages The EP by Hanson Asiedu set for official release on the 3rd of October
In anticipation of The EP ‘Stages’ by Hanson Asiedu, we have decided to give you a taste of what to expect. We believe this review by Tose will convince you to buy, stream, download and share this EP when it finally hits the stores.
Who is Hanson Asiedu
Hanson Asiedu , formally known as Kase Sounds is a London-based singer-songwriter who blends acoustic soul, jazz , gospel and R&B to create a unique sound that is not very common. I suspect jazz might have the stronger influence after listening to how he vocally interprets a song. Hailing from the rich cultural heritage of Ghana, Hanson says ‘I am the only musical one in my family as far as I know, other than my great grandfather who was a Methodist Church organist.’ The interest and relationship with music started from a young age; from singing and dancing in the primary school playground and being chased by other children asking him to sing, through to convincing friends on the phone that he was Craig David.
Hanson has sang in choirs, almost signed a deal in the early 2000’s with an independent record label, and travelled extensively across the UK wherever the music may lead, including busking on the streets of London
Having been in the music scene since 2014, he has continuesdto hone his skills, constantly finding ways to share the message of the gospel through song. After a brief hiatus, he is set to release ‘Stages’- a 5 track EP- on the 3rd of October, under his new stage name.
The Review
Let’s dive in and see what ‘Stages’ has on offer
The first track surprised me. Having been familiar with some of Hanson’s work (ok, maybe just a little bit) previously, I was certainly not expecting this ‘afro-soul’ blend that is ‘God of Your Word’. Thing though is, in this industry surprise is good…as long as it is a good surprise, not a disappointing one. ‘God of Your Word’ is good surprise. My only gripe is how abruptly the song ended. I could gladly listen to the brief instrumental that finished off the song and hear it fade out.
‘Cover me’ is more in the style Hanson is known for. It is a laid back song with a not-so-laid-back theme- desperate cry for God to ‘cover’ a multitude of scenes. As far as music goes, I absolutely love what the bass guitar is doing in this track. You simply can’t ignore it.
‘Lessons You Learn’ is a ‘lesson’ in rhythm! The conga combined with the drums and guitar does something to the head and legs and only a good rhythmic song can do. This song reminds me something Earth Wind and Fire featuring Tracy Chapman would do. Underneath the feel good sound, is a underlying truth but a message of hope for ladies who have suffered heartbreak and/or loss of dignity
With ‘Open Up’, Hanson infuses a latin/samba sound as he delivers this through and through evangelical message inferring that choosing to open up to God is really a no-brainer.
Final Thoughts
Finally, it’s lovely to see Hanson return to leading with the acoustic guitar in the love song that is ‘Easy on Me’. Indeed God is easy on us considering what would have become of us if not for his of His never ending grace!
This is a beautiful EP to say the least. One you should get and play in your car while driving long distance (or short, doesn’t really matter) on open roads. Or if you do not drive then get PROPER ear/headphones bob your head to ‘Stages’!
