Daily Devotional: Believing Without Seeing: The Journey of Thomas and Our Faith Today”
Written by Sunny Unachi on 2nd April 2024
Scripture: John 20:24–29
‘Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’ (Vv 28–29)
It’s said that seeing is believing. Seeing is in part perception, so whatever we see is influenced by what we already believe is true. Our understanding of the world will subconsciously influence our perceptions of life. Thomas struggles as any of us might having never witnessed a resurrection. This is not someone who’s been resuscitated. This is someone who’s died, been buried and is now walking around in a body that is no longer mortal or subject to death and decay again. We can also be selective in what we choose to see; no two witness reports of an accident are identical. If they were it would be cause for suspicion of collusion rather than accuracy.
We also have to be certain we are seeing for ourselves. In an age of social influencers and fake news, it’s increasingly difficult not to follow a specific crowd. One reason for the rapid polarisation across society recently. Ultimately, what we need to see is a revelation of God. This is a disclosure of facts we were previously unaware of or uncomfortable with. This was Thomas’ experience. He heard the stories of the other disciples and had the teaching of Jesus. Only when he came face to face with him did his doubts disappear and he knew deep within himself that Jesus is alive. We may say how much easier it would be if we could walk into a room with Thomas and see Jesus. But our perception may not help us. We need a revelation of Christ to convince us he’s alive today.
Today Consider what doubts do you find lingering in your mind and heart about Jesus?
So our Action today. Looking at your experiences throughout today, ask yourself where God is present in such situations.
Prayer: ‘Lord, I want to find greater confidence in your word and live as you command me to.. Amen’
