Daily Devotional “Feed My Sheep: The Promise of Commitment”

Written by on 3rd April 2024

Scripture: John 21:15–19

‘The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.’ (Vv 28–29)

It’s interesting Peter feels hurt when Jesus repeats the same question. For this is the disciple who declared total support for Jesus (Matthew 26:33) before rejecting him completely (Matthew 26:69–75). Questions are seldom criticisms but a way to ensure we give a thought through response, not an instinctive one, which is only ever skin deep. When someone treats our response as important, they remember the details far better than we do. Trust stands or falls on the degree to which we follow through on our promises. If uncertain, don’t promise. We can’t continue to grow in our faith until we begin to make considered promises to God and others which we will keep, however tough.

Jesus illustrates that we’re only to promise when we can fulfil that promise. Jesus calls Peter the rock of the Church (Matthew 16:18). It’s no good Peter abandoning Church when trouble arises because the church has always been a cauldron since its foundation. One reason that today we have one Lord and 33,089 denominations globally. Jesus reminds Peter his one focus is to feed the sheep; in other words take care of the church. Don’t get distracted, as he immediately does (Vv 20–21). We too must avoid distraction and direct our energies in working as God leads. This doesn’t require a large visionary exploit, but to live the God-life where we are. Start with an honest audit of relationships, attitudes to work, our commitment to truthfulness – the list is extensive.

Today Consider are you content where you find yourself? If not, create a list of why not?

So our Action today. Begin an audit of your everyday life; the encounters you have with others and with your thoughts. Highlight where God is asking you to make some changes. Don’t be ashamed to ask for some help from a trusted Christian friend.

Prayer: ‘Lord, help my promises simply to be “Yes,” or “No”; and may I follow through and glorify you. Amen’ (Matthew 5:37).
