Israel Houghton releases new music video featuring his wife, Adrienne.
Six-time GRAMMY® winning artist, songwriter, and producer Israel Houghton releases video to his new song “Secrets” featuring his wife Adrienne Houghton. He alludes to the criticism they have received over their relationship.
Filmed at their home in Beverley Hill in California, ‘Secrets’ depicts the couple meeting at a masquerade ball before being shunned by scornful, masked guests.
The track, which features on Israel Houghton’s new ‘Road To DeMaskUs’ album, also appears to highlight the comfort he took from “getting past that mask” and being real with God about his failings.
Speaking on the US daytime talk host, ‘The Real’, Israel Houghton said: “I understand what it means to have peace that surpasses understanding.
Israel Found Peace When He Took The Mask Off
“When you are willing to take your mask off and lose everything, I was willing to lose everything because I had platforms, I had accolades, all the things people are after, but I had no peace.”
“The mask, for most of us, feels like it’s protective but really it’s suffocating. So, instead of a platform, I found peace for the first time in my life, you can’t beat that.”
Israel’s First Marriage
The Grammy Award-winning musician announced in February 2016 that he and his first wife, Meleasa Houghton, had officially divorced. They were married for more than 20 years.
The announcement accompanied an admission by Israel that he had “failed and sinned” in his marriage “several years ago”.
Within weeks of revealing his divorce, Israel Houghton and Adrienne were photographed on holiday together in Mexico.
In March 2016, Israel Houghton hit out at the “gossip and salacious, untrue speculative stories” that Adrienne had played a role in the breakdown of his first marriage.
‘Secrets’ also alludes to the solace Israel took in his faith during a tumultuous time in his personal life.
The chorus says: “We all keep pretending we’re better, but still we keep our secrets to cover our shame, You see the darkness and You love us the same.”
Israel and Adrienne met when they worked together on the 2013 film ‘I’m in Love with a Church Girl’, which Israel produced.
