The world woke up to the shocking news that Chadwick Boseman- the actor who played the iconic role of King T’Challa- in the blockbuster movie Black Panther has died, after a 4-year battle with colon cancer.
He was 43 years old
News of his passing was announced in a statement issued by his family on social media: “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement continues
“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honour of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side”
Boseman never shared the news of his illness publicly
Along with his amazing film career, Boseman has been remembered for his inspiring speech to the Howard University (his alma matta) graduating class of 2018 which he started by giving “honour to the creator”
And then towards the end of his speech he used scripture to encourage the graduating class: “I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.”
“Graduating class, hear me well on this day: when you hit this day- when you have reached the hilltop- and you are deciding on next jobs, next steps, careers, further education, you would rather find purpose than a job or career.”
“Purpose crosses disciplines. Purpose is an essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfil.”
Tributes have been pouring in from fans, friends and colleagues
Actor Dwayne Johnson tweeted: “Thank you for shining your light and sharing your talent with the world. My love and strength to your family.”
US Democratic Vice-president nominee, Kamala Harris also shared: “Heartbroken. My friend and fellow Bison Chadwick Boseman was brilliant, kind, learned, and humble. He left too early but his life made a difference. Sending my sincere condolences to his family”
Actor and fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo stated: ” All I have to say is the tragedies amassing this year have only been made more profound by the loss of #ChadwickBoseman. What a man, and what an immense talent. Brother, you were one of the all-time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.”
Boseman was born in South Carolina. He was raised a Christian and was baptized. He was also part of his church choir and youth group. He attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing.
