Bishop of Salisbury Suspended as Church of England Investigates Complaints

Written by on 5th October 2026

The Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Revd Stephen Lake, has been suspended from ministry as two complaints against him move to the next stage of the Church of England’s disciplinary process.

The Church of England confirmed on October 1 that Bishop Lake had been asked to respond to the allegations brought against him under the Clergy Discipline Measure 2003. The development was reported as the complaints progress following allegations of financial misconduct and separate concerns about his conduct that were raised with the Church’s National Safeguarding Team.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has suspended Bishop Lake from ministry while the complaints are considered. The Church has stressed that the suspension is a neutral act and does not represent a finding of guilt.

The two complaints are separate matters. One follows an investigation into allegations concerning financial misconduct, while the other relates to concerns about Bishop Lake’s conduct that were referred to the National Safeguarding Team. Both matters are now proceeding under the Church of England’s established disciplinary process.

The Diocese of Salisbury had previously confirmed that safeguarding concerns had been raised with the National Safeguarding Team and that a financial audit involving two accounts held by the Bishop was continuing. The diocese said the matters were being taken seriously and that it could not comment further while the investigations were ongoing.

Bishop Lake has now been given the opportunity to respond to the allegations as the formal process continues.

During his suspension, Bishop Karen Gorham, the Bishop of Sherborne, remains Acting Bishop of Salisbury. The Diocese of Salisbury serves communities across Wiltshire, Dorset and the Channel Islands, covering more than 2,000 square miles and hundreds of churches.

For the wider Church, the development highlights the importance of accountability, financial transparency and safeguarding within Christian leadership. Churches carry a responsibility not only to proclaim the Christian faith but also to maintain structures that protect people, handle concerns responsibly and ensure that leaders are subject to appropriate oversight.

The Church of England has emphasised that Bishop Lake’s suspension should not be interpreted as a conclusion about the allegations. The disciplinary process must now run its course, with Bishop Lake given the opportunity to respond.

HeartsongLive will continue to follow developments as the Church of England’s disciplinary process progresses.
