British Churches Speak Out Against the Misuse of Christianity

British church leaders are becoming more outspoken in condemning Christianity being used for the purposes of division, hostility and exclusion, as Christian nationalism is growing as a concern.
The problem is becoming more apparent in light of the recent protests against immigration and the use of Christian imagery and rhetoric by far-right groups. During a recent gathering at Lambeth Palace, Church of England leaders urged caution in trying to use Christianity alongside movements that intimidate or exclude others.
“Arun Arora, Bishop of Kirkstall, stated that Christians need to counter any attempt to ‘yoke nationalism with Christianity’ since the real identity of Christians lies in Jesus Christ.
The Church of England has created a working group of bishops to assist churches in their dealings with the increasing levels of tension on the issue of national identity, patriotism, immigration, and diversity. It has also provided tools for facilitating a constructive discussion in this regard within local congregations.
Churches Together in England has also developed resources on Christian nationalism, which include studies of the Bible and other materials aimed at helping Christians understand this issue theologically and socially.
To the Christian community, the discussion should not be about turning away from loving one’s country but remembering priorities.
A Christian faith demands of Christians to love God, love their neighbors and embrace the strangers. The message of Jesus does not establish a community on the basis of race, nationality, and class.
As Britain continues to wrestle with issues related to immigration, identity and sense of national belonging, the churches are presented with a unique opportunity to demonstrate how a different community can be formed where patriotism does not turn into bigotry and where religious icons guide people towards Christ instead of separation.
