First Woman Bishop of Bangor Calls for a Church That Connects Communities

The Church in Wales has welcomed a new chapter in the Diocese of Bangor as the Rt Revd Dr Manon Ceridwen James becomes the first woman to serve as Bishop of Bangor. 

Bishop Manon was formally installed at Bangor Cathedral on Saturday, 19 September, becoming the 82nd bishop to hold the historic office. Her installation brought together people from across the diocese, alongside family, friends and representatives of the local community.

In her first sermon as bishop, she offered a vision of leadership centred on connection rather than authority. Describing the role of a bishop as “not a boss but a connector”, she encouraged churches and Christians across the diocese to listen, pray and work together as they navigate difficult decisions concerning ministry, church buildings and future priorities.

Her message comes at an important moment for the Diocese of Bangor, which has faced questions around governance, safeguarding and financial management. Rather than presenting leadership as a position of control, Bishop Manon emphasised the importance of shared responsibility and trust. 

She also highlighted the Church’s connection across generations, describing the Christian community as belonging not only to one another but also to believers across the world and throughout history.

The significance of her appointment was reflected in the bilingual nature of the installation. Bishop Manon preached in both Welsh and English, underscoring her commitment to serving communities across Wales while preserving the place of the Welsh language within the life of the Church.

She has also invited people across the diocese to join her in prayer each morning at 8:30am, seeking “wisdom and insight” for the challenges ahead.

For Bishop Manon, the future of the Church in Bangor will not be built around one individual. It will depend on Christians listening to God, serving their communities and working together.
