King Charles to Inaugurate Church of England General Synod in November

Written by on 2nd November 2026

King Charles III is set to make history by inaugurating the newly elected General Synod of the Church of England on November 17, 2026. The occasion will mark the first time the King has formally inaugurated a new General Synod since becoming monarch.

The ceremony will also be the first inauguration under the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, who became the first woman to hold the position in the Church of England.

According to an announcement by the Church of England on October 29, the King will attend a service at Westminster Abbey before proceeding to Church House, Westminster, where he will address members during the formal inauguration ceremony.

Archbishop Sarah Mullally and the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, are also expected to address the gathering.

The newly elected General Synod comprises 487 members who will serve a five-year term. It is the Church of England’s national assembly, bringing together representatives from the Houses of Bishops, Clergy and Laity to deliberate on matters affecting the denomination and its wider mission.

Its responsibilities include considering church legislation, approving changes to forms of worship, debating national and international issues and overseeing the Church’s national budget.

Following the inauguration, members will begin a series of sessions addressing several important issues facing the denomination. These include safeguarding, the challenges of maintaining historic church buildings, funding for the Church’s mission and clergy wellbeing.

The discussions come at a time when churches across England continue to navigate questions surrounding declining congregations in some areas, financial sustainability, leadership and their place in contemporary British society.

The King’s participation carries particular significance because of his constitutional position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. It also reflects the historic relationship between the British monarchy and the established Church.

For the Church of England, the new Synod represents an opportunity to shape its priorities for the next five years, strengthen its mission and address some of the challenges affecting its congregations and clergy.

The November inauguration will therefore be more than a formal ceremony. It will mark the beginning of a new period of leadership, discussion and decision-making for one of Britain’s most historic Christian institutions.
