Daily Devotional: Finding Christ in the Unexpected

Written by on 4th April 2024

Scripture: Luke 24:13–35

‘As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going further. But they urged him strongly, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them.’ (Vv 28–29)

The news of Jesus’ death spread faster than the news of his resurrection. Many, like Thomas, struggled to accept that resurrection was possible. So, two disheartened disciples begin a journey home following Passover in Jerusalem. They expressed their disappointment that the redeemer they’d hoped for was no more than a fantasy. And fantasy was correct because Jesus was not the redeemer they’d imagined and expected. Often our questions around what appears as unanswered prayers are rooted in the fact the prayers were not answered as we imagined and wanted. Jesus says pray and then trust that he hears and answers those prayers. We must wrestle with our perceptions of God in our search for his reality.

Jesus presents the whole of God’s redemptive plan, but the two disciples still fail to recognize him. They reach their destination and ask Jesus to stay. They’re willing to extend this straight talking stranger their hospitality, even though they can’t decipher what he’s saying. Without the code – crucifixion and resurrection – the Bible remains an antiquated, meaningless code book. Like those confused disciples we’d best stay close to Jesus until we can decipher what he’s telling us. At the breaking of the bread they’re suddenly reunited with their risen Christ through revelation, and realise the strange feeling they’d experienced alongside this stranger was their flickering flame of faith. If you have questions or disappointments don’t step away from Jesus and trust your own perceptions, rather draw closer and listen to his word.

Today Consider any disappointments you’ve experienced with Jesus? What questions do you want to talk through?

So our Action today. Will you willingly choose to stay close to Jesus even when you can’t understand what’s going on in your life? He will work things through, but not in ways that may be obvious.

Prayer: ‘Lord, keep the flickering flame alive within me whilst I wait to meet with Jesus afresh. Amen’
