Scripture: Psalm 121:1–8
‘The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.’ (Vv 7–8)

God gave us the Bible for our encouragement. It’s full of stories of people who love God despite messing up their friendship with him. However, the great news is that God refuses to hold grudges and always wants to get that friendship back on track. Reading something from this book everyday helps us build our confidence in God, and also our ability to love and serve God. The psalms are a series of songs that encourage us through the bad and the good times. They remind us that even in the bleakest situation God is with us, even though it may prove difficult to see him.

The psalms encourage us to speak about our fears and disappointments honestly and openly. They also remind us that this life will involve feeling despondent and confused, and we may grow angry at the way we feel abandoned by God. But feelings, whilst important and sometimes being all we can focus on, do pass and are never a reliable basis for decision making. God is present in the stormiest circumstances, it’s just difficult to see him when we’re frightened (Matt. 14:22–33). Today the psalmist reminds us in his lyrics that God always has our best interests at heart, even as we experience hardship and difficulties. To stay close to God at such times will demand faith; there’s nothing else for us to cling to. Whilst this is hard and frustrating it is one way God shapes our lives and we must make our choices.

Today Consider how much your feelings influence how you feel and act towards God.
So our Action today. Whether you are in the middle of a storm or not, how will you keep your eyes focussed on Jesus when your thoughts and feelings tell you he’s abandoned you?

Prayer: ‘Lord, I can easily lose sight of you and be consumed with my real needs. Help me in such times to remember that you are with me always and so find you in my crisis. Amen’
