HSL Devotional: GRATITUDE IN DIFFICULT SEASONS | September 3, 2026

Written by on 3rd September 2026

Scripture: Habakkuk 3:17–18; James 1:2–4

Gratitude is easiest when everything is going well. The deeper test comes when life does not look the way we expected.

Habakkuk found himself facing a season where the evidence around him did not suggest abundance. Yet he made a remarkable decision: he would still rejoice in the Lord.

This does not mean Christians should pretend that pain does not exist. Scripture never asks us to deny grief, disappointment or difficulty. Instead, biblical gratitude teaches us to acknowledge our circumstances without allowing them to become bigger than our understanding of God.

You may be waiting for an answer today. You may be dealing with financial pressure, disappointment, uncertainty or a door that refuses to open. You can be honest about the situation and still say, “God, I trust You.”

Gratitude does not always change the situation immediately, but it changes the posture of the heart facing the situation.

Reflection: Can you identify one difficult situation and find one reason to thank God in the middle of it?

Prayer:
Father, teach me to remain grateful even when circumstances are difficult. Help me trust Your character when I cannot understand Your plan. Let my gratitude become an expression of faith, knowing that You remain good in every season. Amen.
