If He Did It Before, He Can Still Do It Again

There is a kind of courage which can only come through remembering. Not the kind of courage that says that all is okay, but the kind that says: *I have seen God do wonders before – and He hasn’t changed.*
If you find yourself in circumstances today which are too great, too hopeless or too far gone, this is for you. The God who parted the seas, opened wombs, raised the dead, and turned prisons into praise halls is still reigning. The history, the history in Scripture and the history of your life shows that God is consistent.
He Is the God Who Does Not Change
Before we look at what He has done, it might be helpful to remind ourselves who He is. Malachi 3:6 says, “For I am the LORD, I change not.” Hebrews 13:8 says the same thing: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
That is the basis for everything else. God does not perform miracles out of nowhere; he pours out his never-changing character. If he was a healer in the gospels, then he is still a healer today. If he was a provider in the wilderness, he is a provider in your wilderness. God’s past is his identity, not just some history.
The Second Acts Are All Over the Scripture
If you read the scripture carefully, you will notice that God is not the one to do anything once.
– Water was parted twice.** The water of the Red Sea was parted for the Israelites in Exodus 14 – and several decades later, God parted water in the Jordan river in Joshua 3 to let a new generation enter their promised land.
– Dead people were brought back twice. Elijah restored life to the widow’s son in 1 Kings 17 – and years later, the son of the Shunammite woman was resurrected by Elisha, who asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
– He made barrenness bloom again and again.** Sarah, Rachel, Hannah, Elizabeth – different women, different eras, the same sovereign God making barren wombs speak volumes.
– He delivered people from impossible situations again and again.** Joseph emerged from the bottom of a pit and a prison cell into a palace. Daniel walked out of a lion’s den untouched. Paul and Silas emerged from a jail cell after singing themselves free in Acts 16.
None of these individuals had to start faith afresh from scratch. They had a background to fall back on. And you do too.
Your Testimony Is No Accident
Consider all that God has done for you so far – an unexpected reversal of fortunes, an unlikely but timely opening of a door, the healing of a broken relationship, a period of supply where the math just did not add up. It was not by chance. It was by Him.
As Psalm 77:11 states, “I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.” Testimony in the life of faith does not happen simply out of remembrance – testimony happens out of an act of faith because remembering the works of the LORD creates expectation for Him to do those same things again. Testimony is the receipt you need to prove that you have done the right things, and receipts give you the confidence needed to go back and ask for more.
Faith Isn’t Naive — It’s Informed
Faith isn’t the same thing as optimism. Optimism is blind hope that things might work out well; faith is informed trust in God that they will work out well.
Numbers 23:19 gives us the reason why it is safe to have this confidence: “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” He is faithful in His dealings from beginning to end; what He has done once, He has done forever.
Standing on the Foundations of His Prior Work
If today you wait for a breakthrough, take this as your foundation: the God who worked in your life yesterday is the same God who works in your life today. He did not get too old to work in your life. He did not lose all his resources, his power, or his ways of working with you.
He worked this way before. He can work like that again.
