Navigating Through Shame and Rejection: 5 verses to get you through this season

Shame and rejection may bring wounds that aren’t visible. One hurtful word, one broken relationship, one error or omission from someone’s life, can make you feel like you don’t matter and that you’re not good enough.
However, there is one lesson that we need to learn in all of this, and that is: what happened to you doesn’t define who you are.
Rejection may be a part of your story, but it doesn’t have to be your identity.
1. Stop Hiding from God
Shame tends to drive us into hiding. Just like Adam and Eve did in Genesis 3 after their mistakes, we may feel the need to hide. However, God did not leave them alone; He sought them out.
In times of shame, do not shy away from God. Move towards Him. His grace surpasses your mistakes.
2. Do Not Let People’s Rejection Determine Your Worth
There are many reasons why people may reject you, but that does not make you worth less. Some rejections merely mean that you were not meant for the situation, person or place.
Fact is, people rejecting you does not mean God is rejecting you.
3. Forgive Yourself and Let Go
The most difficult part might be forgiveness of ourselves. We keep beating ourselves up about things which have happened when God has long since pardoned us.
Philippians 3:13-14 tells us to forget the past and strive for the future. Learn from your past mistakes but don’t stay stuck in them.
4. Overcome Self-Doubt with God’s Truth
Whenever you have those self-damning thoughts that you are worthless, unwelcome, or disqualified, respond with the Bible.
How you feel may vary, but God’s Word does not.
5 Scriptures to Cling to when navigating seasons of rejection and shame;
1. Romans 8:1, “Because there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”
You are not condemned. God’s grace provides room for healing and a new beginning.
2. Psalm 34:18, “God is nigh to those whose hearts are broken.”
God will not be far away when the pain of rejection breaks your heart.
3. Isaiah 41:10, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee.”
You do not have to suffer through the pain by yourself. God is right there with you.
4. Hebrews 4:16, “Let us come boldly unto the throne of grace.”
It is possible to approach the Lord regardless of how undeserving you feel.
5. 1 Peter 2:9, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.”
It doesn’t matter who turned their backs on you; what matters is that God sees you as chosen.
You Can Be Healed. Don’t let yesterday’s rejection rob you of your future. Don’t let shame make you run and hide from the One who is longing to heal you.
You messed up—but you are not a mess-up. You were rejected—but you are not rejected. You were hurt—but you are not hopeless. The past may give us part of our story, but God gives the last word.
