When God Feels Far Away

Written by on 23rd April 2026

There’s a moment that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived through it.

You’ve prayed. Not casually, not in passing, but properly. You’ve taken your time, chosen your words, maybe even repeated yourself just to be sure you meant it. You’ve tried to focus, to believe, to feel something. And then… nothing.

Not a shift. Not a sense of peace. Not even the small comfort you expected. Just silence.

At first, you brush it off. Maybe you were distracted. Maybe you need to try again later. But when it keeps happening, the silence starts to feel different. It becomes heavier, more personal. And somewhere in the middle of that quiet, a thought begins to form, almost reluctantly: Is God even listening?

You don’t always say it out loud. It feels like the kind of thought you shouldn’t have. But it’s there anyway, sitting quietly in the background of your faith.

The Kind of Question Most People Don’t Say Out Loud

What makes this experience difficult is not just the silence itself, but the questions that come with it.

Because once you start wondering if God is listening, other thoughts follow.

Have I done something wrong?

Am I missing something?

Why does it feel like nothing is changing?

And then, if you’re being completely honest, you might compare yourself to other people.

People who seem to hear God clearly. People who talk about answered prayers like it’s normal. People whose faith looks steady, uncomplicated, almost… effortless.

Meanwhile, you’re here trying to figure out why your prayers feel like they’re going nowhere.

It can feel isolating, but it isn’t uncommon.

You’re Not the First to Feel This Way

One of the quiet comforts in Scripture is how unfiltered it can be.

In Psalm 13, David doesn’t hide his frustration. He asks, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?”

That’s not polished language. It’s not what you’d expect from someone described as a man after God’s own heart.

But it’s there, and maybe that’s the point.

Faith, at its core, has room for honesty. It doesn’t collapse because you asked a difficult question. It doesn’t disappear because you admitted you don’t understand what’s happening. If anything, those moments reveal something deeper. Not the absence of faith, but the tension within it.

Feeling Distant Is Not the Same as Being Distant

This is where things get a bit tricky, because feelings are convincing. If something feels far away, your instinct is to assume that it is far away. That’s how most of life works. But spiritually, that isn’t always the case.

In Hebrews 13:5, there’s a clear statement: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Not sometimes. Not depending on your performance. Not based on how consistent you’ve been. Never!

So now you have two realities sitting side by side.

One says: God feels far. The other says: God is not far.

And that tension… that’s where faith lives.

So Why Does It Feel This Way?

There isn’t just one answer. Sometimes, it’s simply life.

You’re tired. Mentally, emotionally, even physically. And when you’re exhausted, everything feels distant, including God. Other times, it’s disappointment.

You prayed for something specific. You believed it would happen. It didn’t. Or it didn’t happen the way you expected. And now, even when you try to pray again, there’s hesitation.

You might not say it directly, but there’s a quiet resistance. What if nothing happens again?

And then there are moments where God is working, just not in the way you recognise. That one is harder to accept, because it asks you to trust something you cannot yet see.

What Do You Actually Do in That Space?

Not theory. Not “just have faith” statements. Something real.

1. Say what you actually feel

Not what sounds right or spiritual, but what’s real.

If you’re frustrated, say that. If you’re confused, say that too. If you feel distant, don’t hide it.

In Psalm 62:8, it says, “Pour out your heart before Him.”

Not filter it. Not edit it. Pour it out.

Something is grounding about honesty. It brings you back into something real, instead of something rehearsed.

2. Stay with truth, even when it feels flat

There’s a stage where Scripture doesn’t feel as alive as it used to. You read it, but it doesn’t land the same way. It feels quiet, but that doesn’t mean it has lost its power.

It just means your feelings haven’t caught up yet. Verses like Isaiah 55:11 remind you that God’s Word does not return empty. It is still working, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Sometimes, you hold onto truth before you feel it.

3. Create space again

This one sounds simple, but it’s often overlooked. Your attention is constantly being pulled in different directions. Notifications, conversations, responsibilities, expectations. And in the middle of all that noise, it becomes harder to notice anything subtle, including God.

So you step back, even if it’s just for a few minutes. No distractions. No rushing. Just space.

It doesn’t always lead to a dramatic moment, but it helps you reset.

4. Keep showing up

This is probably the hardest part, because showing up without immediate results feels pointless. But that’s where something deeper is built.

In Galatians 6:9, it says not to grow weary in doing good, because in due season, you will reap.

Not instantly, but in due season.

That requires patience. And patience, to be honest, is rarely comfortable.

What If Something Is Happening Beneath the Surface?

There’s a tendency to measure progress by what you can see: changes in your situation, clear answers, visible movement. But not everything works that way.

Some things develop quietly.

Your endurance, your trust and your ability to stay steady even when nothing seems to be shifting.

In Romans 8:28, it says all things are working together for good.

Not just the obvious things, but all things.

Even this.

A Thought That Might Help You Breathe a Bit

Maybe God isn’t as far as it feels, maybe the silence isn’t rejection, maybe it’s just a different kind of presence.

One that isn’t loud, or immediate, or obvious, but still real, still active and still there.

If you’re in that place right now, where prayer feels quiet and God feels distant, you don’t need to pretend your way through it.

You can be honest. You can be unsure. You can still keep going, even if it feels slow.

And you don’t have to carry that alone.

Because even when it feels quiet… you’re not alone.
