Scripture: John 12:34–36

‘Voices from the crowd answered, “We heard from God’s Law that the Messiah lasts forever. How can it be necessary, as you put it, that the Son of Man ‘be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?’ (V 34)

Today we’re very conscious of our identity. There’s innumerable courses, podcasts, and books on how to unlock the very best self we can. Consequently, we are bombarded with opinions about what’s best to eat for our health, what’s to be avoided to save our planet etc. The Christian community isn’t immune from this self help revolution. Movements compete to attract our attention in our search to find fullness of life. Yet, the fact remains that only Jesus provides such fullness (John 10:10). There’s no shortcut to holiness; simply the time honoured path of faithfully loving and serving God in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.

Jesus declares He alone is the light, a light that’s constantly challenged by the surrounding darkness. The number of high profile Christian failures reminds us of how difficult it is to keep one’s footing walking the Christian path. The good news is that God is always there to set us back on our feet whenever we fall if that’s what we want. The Christian way of life is very simple, but always demanding. Jesus models the Christian life for us in the Gospels, so reading the Bible daily is essential. It’s the idiot’s guide to being a Christian. Then there’s regular prayer, which redirects our attention from the darkness to Jesus the light and reminds us it’s never about self realisation but ensuring God’s Kingdom is seen on earth through us. That’s a game changer. Learning to live loving God and neighbour and not simply for ourselves.

Today Consider stopping worrying about what others think and celebrate God loves you for who you are.

So our Action today. Reflect on who you are seeking to become? Why is this important to you? Talk with trusted family and friends about how they see you, and read the Bible to discover how precious you are to God for each of us is uniquely made in God’s image. (Col. 3:1–2)

Prayer: ‘Lord, teach me to rejoice that you are always sufficient for me. Amen.’ (2 Cor. 12:9–10)
