Scripture: Psalm 27:1–5

‘One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord  all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.  (Vv 36–37)

It might sound as if the Psalmist is suggesting we live our whole life inside a church building. But God is not limited to a building, God is everywhere (Psalm 139:7–12). So wherever we are, God is with us! It’s the reason Jesus calls us witnesses (Acts 1:8) for God is seen through our attitudes and behaviours. Somewhat challenging, because we each mess up. The way we react and address our mistakes is also a witness to the presence of God in our lives. Changing attitudes and behaviours can prove difficult. They are instinctive, often mirroring behaviours we’ve observed growing up. God knows this and gives every disciple a toolbox starter kit of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23). Like with all tools it takes time to become skilled users.

Hope has been established through Christ’s death and resurrection. The power of satan is broken so that we can choose to live the way we want to. However, we must engage our will to learn how to keep confidence in God when it appears things are not going our way. For our faith built on a promise is in fact, ‘confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see’ (Hebrews 11:1). It is only as we employ hope when facing tough times that we will remain confident of seeing God’s goodness throughout our life (Psalm 27:13–14). This is a daily challenge for each one of us.

Today Consider how aware you are of God’s presence wherever you find yourself?

So our Action today. Review your recent behaviour. Does it serve as a useful witness to God? What changes would you like to make?

Prayer: ‘Lord, Since I live by the Spirit, let me keep in step with the Spirit. Amen’ (Galatians 5:25)
