Scripture: Colossians 2:1–11

‘Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.’ (Vv 2–4)

We usefully leave much behind us as adults; nappies, compulsory exams, teenage angst to name three. However, something can sadly get lost as we mature; our imagination. Adult life has little place for it. Yet our imagination is our ability to form a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before seen in reality. It is our creative ability empowering us to deal with problems. It’s the foundation for human resourcefulness.* The Bible stirs our imagination describing God, his purpose, and our destiny.Filled with symbolism it invites us to engage by applying its teaching to our everyday life. The Centre for Bible Engagement reveals that someone engaging with the Bible four or more times a week sees a measurable difference in their behaviour.

Living the Christian life in the humdrum of our day means engaging with scripture and applying our discoveries to life experience. This is an exciting adventure of learning how we can live the Bible today. Paul tells us to lift the level of our thinking above the everyday assumptions on which life is built and imagine how life might be if lived led by God’s Spirit. By considering ‘The things above’, that is looking at life through Jesus’ eyes (John 5:19), we will find we can change our behaviour and become more like Jesus. First we must imagine what the Bible instructs us to do. Only then can we explore how we master God-life here on earth (Matthew 5:43–48).

Today Consider how you can engage with your imagination once again.

So our Action today. Look at the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1–4) and imagine how you can live this out practically in your life – and then begin to do so.

Prayer: ‘Lord, open my eyes that I might see wonderful truths in your Word. Amen’
