Scripture: Jeremiah 17:5–10

‘Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.’ (Vv 7–8)

A drought is a long period with little or no rain. It damages vegetation and prevents growth. Here it’s a symbol of our human life struggling to survive in times of need. We all experience seasons in life when everything goes wrong. Whatever we try, we’re unable to improve our situation. This inevitably leads to despondency and fear. When we can’t resolve our own situation we tend to panic. Since life creates situations which lie beyond our control, for example a bad health diagnosis, loss of job, the breakdown of a relationship, we will experience a time of drought which we’re not sure we’ll survive.

Jeremiah, a prophet who suffered unjustly, tells us to trust God. This is difficult because we’d like God to ease our problem so we can be sure to trust him. However, trust is choosing to believe something without the actual evidence to support our act of trust (Heb. 11:1–3). Our survival depends on God’s promise (John 3:16), and it is this promise that provides the water we need to keep us alive. Discovering that God is the source of our strength and encouragement in the centre of our personal crisis will enable us to endure the drought without withering, or worse, dying. Christ is our living water (John 4:13–14) and we must learn in every twist and turn of our journey of faith to draw nourishment from him alone. This is tough but it’s the foundation for building confidence in God.

Today Consider how trusting God with every situation in your life makes you feel.

So our Action today. Identify where you struggle now, or might in the future, with completely trusting God with your present and future when experiencing a season of drought.

Prayer: ‘Lord, I find it difficult surrendering control of my life to you alone. Help me to build my confidence in your provision for my life. Amen’
