No Matter What, Play to Win with Sheila Watt
Written by Praise Afolabi on 4th September 2026
What does it really mean to win as a Christian?
We often think of winning in terms of achieving our goals, overcoming difficult circumstances, succeeding in our careers, building healthy relationships or finally seeing something we have prayed about come to pass. But the Bible gives us a deeper understanding of victory.
As believers, we are not called to live from a place of defeat. We are called to overcome.
This does not mean that life will always be easy. It does not mean we will never experience disappointment, temptation, fear or difficult seasons. Rather, it means that whatever comes our way, we have Christ with us, and through Him we can keep standing, keep growing and keep moving forward.
No matter what happens, play to win.
You Were Born Again to Overcome
The moment you became a believer, your identity changed.
You are no longer defined by your past, your mistakes, your fears or the challenges surrounding you. You belong to Christ, and that changes how you approach the battles of life.
Revelation 12:11 speaks of believers overcoming through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Our victory is not based on human strength. It is rooted in what Jesus Christ has already accomplished.
First John 5:5 also asks, “Who is it that overcomes the world?” The answer is the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
That means overcoming is part of our identity in Christ.
You may face temptation, but you do not have to surrender to it.
You may face fear, but fear does not have to control you.
You may experience hardship, but hardship does not have the final word.
You are an overcomer.
Biblical Victory Is More Than Success
There is nothing wrong with wanting to succeed. We all desire progress in different areas of our lives. We want healthy relationships, meaningful work, financial stability, spiritual growth and the fulfilment of God’s purpose.
But biblical victory goes deeper than getting what we want.
Winning God’s way means living a life that pleases Him.
It means choosing obedience when disobedience would be easier. It means remaining faithful when nobody is watching. It means trusting God when the outcome is unclear.
Romans 8:37 gives us this powerful assurance:
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Notice that Paul does not say we are conquerors only when everything is going well.
He says in all these things.
The victory is not dependent on the absence of trouble. We can experience victory even while walking through difficulty because Christ is with us in the middle of it.
Faith Gives You the Strength to Keep Going
Every believer will face challenges.
Some will be expected. Others will arrive without warning.
There will be moments when you wonder whether you can continue. There will be seasons when the mountain in front of you seems too large and the answer to your prayer seems too far away.
But challenges can become opportunities for your faith to grow.
Philippians 4:13 reminds us:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
This is not a promise that we will never struggle. It is a reminder that we do not have to face our struggles in our own strength.
Christ strengthens us.
He gives us grace to keep going.
He gives us wisdom when we do not know what to do.
He gives us courage when fear tells us to stop.
Sometimes the very thing you are asking God to remove may become the place where your faith becomes stronger.
The boulders in your path can become stepping stones on the road ahead.
When Fear Comes, Remember Who Is With You
Fear has a way of making problems look bigger than they are.
One difficult phone call can make us imagine the worst. One disappointment can make us believe everything is falling apart. One failure can make us question whether we will ever succeed.
But God’s Word gives us a different perspective.
Isaiah 41:10 says:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.”
God does not simply tell us not to fear. He reminds us why we can refuse to live in fear.
He is with us.
He promises to strengthen us.
He promises to help us.
He promises to uphold us.
So when fear starts speaking loudly, return to what God has said.
You do not have to allow panic to make your decisions for you.
Tune Your Spirit to God
One of the most important parts of living victoriously is learning to recognise the voice and direction of the Holy Spirit.
It is easy to pray only about what we want.
“God, this is my plan.”
“God, this is what I want.”
“God, make this happen.”
But spiritual maturity teaches us to ask a different question:
“Father, what do You want?”
There is a difference.
God wants us to become sensitive to His leading. As we spend time in His Word, pray and fellowship with Him, our hearts become increasingly aligned with His desires.
The Holy Spirit helps us recognise what is right and gives us the courage to act on it.
Sometimes God will ask you to do something that does not immediately make sense.
When He does, obedience matters.
Do not keep negotiating with God when He has already given you direction.
When the Holy Spirit speaks, learn to respond.
Obedience Produces Spiritual Boldness
There is something that happens when you consistently obey God.
You become more confident in Him.
You begin to trust His voice.
You become bolder in prayer.
You become more willing to step out in faith.
First Samuel 2:30 reminds us of an important principle: God honours those who honour Him.
Obedience is not always dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like forgiving someone.
Sometimes it means walking away from a temptation.
Sometimes it means telling the truth.
Sometimes it means starting the thing God has placed on your heart.
Sometimes it means waiting when you desperately want to move.
The little acts of obedience matter.
They shape our character and teach us to trust God in bigger things.
Guard Your Mind Because Your Thoughts Matter
One of the greatest battles many believers face happens in the mind.
A thought comes.
Then another.
Before long, what seemed like an innocent thought becomes fear, resentment, lust, discouragement or temptation.
This is why we cannot afford to treat our thoughts casually.
Proverbs 4:20-23 teaches us to pay attention to God’s Word and keep it in our hearts because His Word brings life and health. The passage also reminds us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from them.
What are you allowing to occupy your mind?
What thoughts have you been rehearsing?
Are they consistent with God’s Word?
Not every thought deserves your attention.
When a thought contradicts God’s truth, you have to learn to reject it rather than nurture it.
Replace the lie with truth.
Replace fear with faith.
Replace hopelessness with God’s promises.
Replace temptation with obedience.
Your mind is a battlefield, and you have a responsibility to guard it.
Be Careful What You Speak
Our words matter too.
It is possible to believe God in our hearts while constantly speaking words that contradict what we say we believe.
We say, “God is faithful,” but then repeatedly declare that everything will fail.
We say, “God will provide,” but allow fear to dominate every conversation.
We say, “I trust God,” but speak hopelessness over our future.
This does not mean we should pretend that problems do not exist. Faith is not denial.
It means that our circumstances should not become greater than God’s truth in our mouths.
Speak honestly, but speak with faith.
Speak about the problem, but remember the God who is greater than the problem.
Your tongue should not become a tool for destruction.
Let your words carry life.
Stir Up What God Has Put Inside You
There are seasons when you will not feel motivated.
You will not always feel inspired.
You will not always feel spiritually strong.
And that is where discipline becomes important.
You cannot build your spiritual life entirely around how you feel.
There is something inside you that must be stirred up.
Your faith.
Your love for God.
Your desire to serve.
Your knowledge of God’s Word.
The presence of the Holy Spirit within you.
You have a part to play.
You cannot simply wait until you feel ready.
Sometimes faith looks like taking the next step while your knees are still shaking.
Sometimes you have to get up, pray, open your Bible and remind yourself of what God has said.
You have to feed your spirit.
Just as your body needs physical food, your spirit needs spiritual nourishment.
The more you feed on God’s Word, the stronger you become in your ability to stand.
You Can Be Different in the Middle of Pressure
Imagine being surrounded by confusion and still having peace.
Imagine being under pressure and still knowing that God is in control.
Imagine watching other people give up while you continue to stand.
That is what spiritual maturity can produce.
You can be confident when others are confused.
You can be peaceful when others are under pressure.
You can keep overcoming when others have become overwhelmed.
Not because you are naturally stronger than everyone else, but because your strength comes from somewhere deeper.
Your confidence is in God.
Do Not Give Up in the Hardest Season
Sometimes the hardest moment is the moment immediately before breakthrough.
You may reach a point where everything looks hopeless. Failure may seem to be knocking at your door. You may even wonder whether continuing is worth it.
That is precisely when you need to press into God’s Word.
Do not run away from God because life is difficult.
Run towards Him.
Open the Scriptures.
Pray.
Listen.
Ask the Holy Spirit for direction.
Allow God to correct you.
Allow Him to redirect you.
Allow Him to strengthen you.
God’s correction is not rejection. When He corrects us, He can also direct and protect us.
He wants us to become more like Him, and He wants us to develop His heart for people who are still searching for Him.
No Matter What, Keep Playing to Win
Winning as a Christian does not mean that you will never experience failure.
It means failure does not get the final word.
It does not mean you will never feel afraid.
It means fear does not have to control you. It does not mean temptation will disappear.
It means you have the grace and power to choose obedience.
It does not mean every battle will be easy.
It means you do not have to fight alone.
So, no matter what you are facing today, play to win.
Keep trusting God.
Keep feeding on His Word.
Keep listening to the Holy Spirit.
Keep your thoughts aligned with truth.
Keep your words filled with faith.
Keep obeying God in the little things.
Keep stirring up the gifts He has placed inside you.
And above all, do not give up.
You are not called to live as a defeated child of God.
You are called to overcome.
Through Christ, you are more than a conqueror.
No matter what happens, keep your faith, keep moving forward and play to win.
A Prayer for the Overcomer
Father, thank You for the victory we have through Jesus Christ. Help me to remember that I am not fighting from a place of defeat. Teach me to trust You when life becomes difficult, to guard my thoughts, to speak words of faith and to obey the leading of Your Holy Spirit.
Strengthen me when I feel weak. Give me courage when fear comes. Help me to remain faithful when the journey becomes difficult. Let Your Word renew my mind and guide my decisions.
Help me to keep pressing forward, knowing that You are with me and that through Christ, I am more than a conqueror.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
