Scripture: Genesis 3:8–15

‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers;

he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’ (V 15)

We all make mistakes in life. A mistake represents a wrong decision. Sometimes it can easily be corrected, but at other times mistakes can prove fatal. Adam and Eve knew what God had told them they must do, yet they hesitated to obey. The anticipation of becoming like God was appealing (Gen. 3: 4–5), and Satan appeared convincing. In this moment of judgement the full implications of this one action reverberated throughout creation. Nature still feels the pain (Romans 8:22–25), yet there is hope to be found in despair. Just as victory was seized from the jaws of destruction in the Resurrection, similarly we can find hope in the darkest moments of our existence.

Hope is holding onto our confidence for our future. It’s hard when our situation scares us. We often regret our bad decisions, yet hope raised Jesus from the dead and will offer a path through our apparent blind alley. Whilst Adam and Eve’s bad decision brought God’s curse, they equally received his promise. Future promises seem distant today, perhaps unobtainable. But this is God’s promise, and he won’t fail us (Deuteronomy 31:7–8). Life is unpredictable and we usually assume disaster. We’re asked to hold onto God’s promise and, however uncomfortable our experience, keep going. Like countless generations before us we must keep our eyes on the prize and carry on; ‘When my way gets dark as night, I know the lord will be my light, Keep your hand on the plough, hold on’.*

Today Consider what your hope for the future looks like. .

So our Action today. Accept the challenge of looking beyond the present and deciding what it will take to work towards the future you want.

Prayer: ‘Lord, thank you that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Amen.’
