Scripture: Psalm 90:1–6

‘Lord, you have been our dwelling-place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.’ (Vv 1–2)

Our confidence in God relies on his consistency. God has always been, and will forever be, someone hard for us to grasp. Our days consist of incidents, all time measured, and we naturally order our lives in terms of time. Eternity, which is the time God occupies (Ps. 90:4), is something we might seek to imagine but will never understand. The banknote in our wallet has a trusted monetary value. Yet, it’s no more than paper and coloured ink. We expect it to be accepted in exchange for our purchases, but the note’s value depends on the Bank of England’s promise to recognise and respect its value. So our currency, our personal wealth, is itself subject to a promise. If the bank fails, overnight we become financially bankrupt.

We have to struggle to maintain our hope in a God who won’t fail to keep his promise. His currency of love may feel strained as we pass through uncertainty, yet it’s at such moments we remind ourselves that God’s currency can never fail. We will never be bankrupt if we choose to focus on God’s promise everyday of our lives. The problem we can all face is feeling bankrupt in life, uncertain if we can face our circumstances. It demands we take a leap of faith and continue to trust God’s promise when all the evidence might suggest we’re alone and out on a limb. Hope is what we need, the willingness to keep faith in God’s plan for our future.

Today Consider how secure you feel in God’s currency of love?

So our Action today. Write down what your future hope looks like and share and pray about this with a good friend.

Prayer: ‘Lord, thank you my life is safe in your care. May this keep me going through tough times. Amen’
