Scripture: Matthew 6:25–34

‘But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’ (Vv 33–34)

We stay focussed on God through life’s many challenges by seeking his Kingdom. This isn’t some strange quest for some scarce object. It’s learning to use God’s practical instructions in our everyday experience. God’s Kingdom qualities are scattered throughout scripture, and one easy place to start is the Our Father, the prayer Jesus taught all his disciples, (Matthew 6:9–15). The Kingdom demands an acknowledgement that we serve God and his principles, hence the importance of worship. Simply declaring our love for God and his many blessings.

It then tells us that God’s will on earth is the expression of his Kingdom. So, we helpfully begin with asking God to provide us with everything he knows we need – not just finance and food, but friendship, health, and a practical way through our difficulties. Then we are invited to forgive others in precisely the way we want God to forgive us. We’re to forgive friend and foe alike (Matthew 5:43–47). Then we ask for God’s help to avoid temptation. We’re surrounded by these and we’re all tempted. But with God’s help and our good choices we can resist (1 Corinthians 10:13). Finally, when we are wrapped up in what we know is wrong we ask God to take hold of us and walk with us in the opposite direction. This process starts with an awareness that something is harmful to us and then over time encourages us to find a path out of its control, often with the help of others.

Today Consider the Our Father prayer and how well you practise what it says in your everyday life.

So our Action today. Say the Our Father out loud (you can find it in Matthew 5:43–47). Where might you begin to make improvements to your Kingdom living?

Prayer: ‘Lord, I choose to work with you in building a Kingdom lifestyle one step at a time. Amen’
