Scripture: Isaiah 55:8–13

‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater.’ (Vv 9–10)

Whilst we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), we are not ourselves gods. Scripture is clear that we are God’s creation and we find wellbeing when we seek to live in harmony with God’s aspirations. Remarkably God has a unique plan for each one of our lives – something only a supernatural God could conceive and deliver. So, we can expect to run into some bad weather on our journey through life. We are invited to trust God has our best interests at heart throughout. We cannot understand all God is doing, and sometimes it feels very uncomfortable. The question is can I and will I keep faith with God?

It’s not that we won’t complain, the Bible is full of complaints to God. These are healthy expressions of the pressure we’re under. They give voice to our uncertainties and fears. Underneath, however, can we trust God will bring us through and whatever the outcome somewhere within it God has hold of us (Romans 8:18–28). Life will bring us setbacks, and we may not be able to fulfil our own hopes. Even then can we find faith in our frustration to trust our onward journey to God? We know our destination is eternity, but we may well have to navigate some hellish experiences along the way. Yet, when we are able to discover God in our despair as much as our joy, we find the resources we need to navigate our path successfully.

Today Consider that it’s OK to complain when life is tough. Behind the complaint, will you trust God with your future?

So our Action today. Identify who you feel comfortable talking to when life gets tough. Don’t struggle alone – but know who you can turn to when struggling.

Prayer: ‘Lord, I fear suffering in my life. Help me to grow in confidence in your ability to bring me safely through my life’s struggles. Amen’
